Financial analysis company Sageworks has released a study that ranks industries by their net profit margin in 2008. The study only tracked privately held companies.

The top ten most profitable industries in 2008 were:

  1. Offices of dentists
  2. Accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services
  3. Legal services
  4. Offices of other health practitioners
  5. Support activities for mining
  6. Offices of physicians
  7. Outpatient care centers
  8. Coating, engraving, heat treating and allied activities
  9. Nondepository credit intermediation
  10. Agencies, brokerages and other insurance related activities

Are these the best businesses to start in a recession?
