Paperback Recycling Stand for Tourist Areas in Developing Countries

I once spent two years bicycling around the world. I had an awesome time, and I have never read more books than I did during that trip. Maybe a lot has changed, but when I did my trip in the mid-90s, in many developing countries, the only place to find English language books was in a stationery store or in a mall. When I did find them I was pleased to see that they were quite affordable, and all classics - so I caught up on many I had missed.

BUT - I was constantly on the lookout for more recent paperback novels. Sometimes I was able to find some in a backpacker place in town, but I could never count on finding them.

Here is my idea: a paperback recycling stand. Start out with at least 50 paperbacks and offer to trade with travelers. Their book plus $1 (or a nominal amount of the local currency) = 1 of your books. You still have the same number of books to trade, but you also have a fee.

At one point, my husband and I were carrying something like 14 books. I would have happily paid to trade some in if I could have found place to do it.

This idea was generously donated by Joan. As a thank you for the donation of the business idea this site and the Myvesta Foundation have helped to fund the business of entrepreneur Samir Veysalov.
