Raising Worms for Fish Bait, Composting, and Castings

Raising worms is a very simple and easy business to start up. The cost is very low. Red Worms are the best because they are domesticated. They make excellent fish bait, do a great job of composting, and the castings are used in potting soil to enrich it.

They can be kept in plastic or wooden boxes. A person can easily build a worm box himself from scrap lumber. They only need to be fed about once a week, and that can be any vegetable matter, plain corn meal, leaves, grass cuttings, paper shreds, etc. No citrus or onion and no meat or animal fat.

The containers they’re kept in need to have a fine wire or burlap bottom to keep them from escaping, and the level of dirt and vegetable matter no closer to the top than about 6 inches. There needs to be a cover to prevent predators from eating them.

They reproduce about every month or two, so the entrepreneur will need an additional box for dividing the worm “herd”.

The most valuable by-product is the castings. It’s a rich fertilizer that can be used alone on garden plants.
