Wedding Photographer
Earning extra money as a photographer can be easy depending upon the skills and capabilities of other photographers in your area.
If you live in a metropolitan area you might find that there are plenty of photographers in the area that are very skilled and have a lot of experience. In less metropolitan areas there is less competition and more opportunity for the average photographer.
Today with digital technology there are some terrific tools that you can use. Some online services like Shutterfly offer a pro gallery where you can upload your digital photos and let the family, bride and groom pick and print the ones they want. Depending upon your mark-up you could set a lower fee for shooting the photos and a higher mark-up on the prints themselves. You set your own prices for the prints.
In less developed areas the ability to have someone shoot even basic pictures and offer a high quality print is a nice small business to have.
A word of warning however, no matter how good of a job that you do taking the picture, many people don’t like their own photos. That is not a reflection of your skills and abilities. I used to earn extra money as a wedding photographer and while the money was nice for a few hours of work, it could be a lot of stress and pressure knowing that this was a “one chance to get it right� affair. But thankfully with today’s digital cameras you can now see how each shot comes out as you go rather than waiting for the film to be developed.
The best advice before launching into starting your own wedding photography business would be to buy a book on the subject to study. There are some excellent books about digital wedding photography that are available. Experiment with your camera and practice, practice, practice shooting in all light situations so you know how to operate your camera as if it is an extension of yourself. It will be stressful enough on the day of the shoot and you don’t want to figure out how to operate the camera then.
