Help Local Contractors Find Work

Again from the little upfront investment pool comes the contractor referral network idea.

This can be a real blessing to home improvement contractors, tradesmen, plumbers and electricians, and anyone else that does work in the yard or the home of client’s.

While contractors might be exceptionally skilled at what they do with garage doors, wood or heating and AC units, they are not necessarily great at finding and booking new business.

When their schedule is full they don’t spend time marketing their services and as soon as the backlog is completed they are left with time on their hands.

For next to nothing you can start a contractor referral service in your area that people can come to rely upon when they are looking for a new landscaper, window washer, gutter installer, etc.

The concept is simple. You make contact with a number of contractors in your area to build a list of reliable contractors. You can start like Angie Hicks did of Angie’s List and go door-to-door and asking neighbors about contractors they’ve used and been happy with. Once you get names of contractors you can then call those contractors and ask them for a list of references that you can also call to make sure customers were satisfied with their work.

Once you have a good list to refer clients to you can start by placing a classified advertisement in your local paper letting people know that if they are looking for any type of contractor they can call your business for a referral.

If you’ve seen a local advertisement for a contractor referral company or received a postcard from a local referral group, maybe readers can post the ads or suggestions for ads in the comments are of this post.

Here is how it works. When someone is looking for a contractor they will call your number, place their request and you’ll contact the contractor and schedule the visit to the client’s house. Once the contractor has made the visit you can call the customer back and survey them about how satisfied they were with the work performed.

You will then bill the contractor a percentage of the total bill for the referral, and that’s how you make money.

Angie Hicks grew her door-to-door business into a large web based company and it looks like she has been successful spreading her neighborhood concept into a national business.
